ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
The puppeteer Juliana Notari proposes an intensive workshop on creating puppets from the body, visceral and subjective connection with the material chosen for the composition of texture, drama and gestures.
The choice of the materials that make up the construction of the puppet, by Juliana, defines the movement and the whole existence of the object that will be animated. Juliana Notari has a very peculiar and personal way of building her puppets and also of relating to this art. Thought is spiral and in every creative process it often goes through the same points, always changing the look and perspective.
All stages of the process are continuously mixed and separated. It is the tireless action of dying and living, of observing and feeling what is the part and what is the whole, continuously. All of Juliana Notari's puppets are made of <self-matter> , that is, with elements that inhabit her life, her history, her roots, her looks and her loves, and so on. From clothes of the past, childhood, to dried leaves of trees that the artist found along the way, for his nomadism. Threads, fibers, blood, notebooks from the past, objects from loved ones or strangers that caught Juliana's eye.
In 2011, during his hospitalization in a nursing home in France for the research of old age, one of his points of interest was the texture of the SKIN of the elderly. During the 6 months of residence, Juliana observed the process of oxidation of organic matter such as fruits and vegetables compared to the aged bodies of the inhabitants of the residences. In this way, he created leather catalogs, with many types of textures, as a result of many mixtures and symbiosis. She calls them "living and visual textures."
From the beginning of his research career, the ULLS and the gaze are essential and fundamental elements for the practice of the puppet and also for advancing the experiments in this artistic field. What is the look that defines the look? How do eyes made of various materials communicate with the fleshly eyes of a human being? How to make kinetic eyes? What is the influence of the choice of subjects for the gaze to work in the dramatic action? What is the triad between the eyes of the puppeteer, the eyes of the puppet, and the eyes of the spectator? These are some of the questions that run through the empirical and philosophical research of the puppet's gaze.
The puppet has HEART . In the Guarani language there is the word Ñe'ẽ which means word, but also soul, presence, voice and also the voice of birds and other animals. There is a place in the body, a little below the heart, called Ñe'ẽ . From this point a puppet is manipulated. It has to do with the axis of the object and with the relation of the axes of the bodies that work the passage of life and death, the great gesture of the art of the marionettes. Thinking of a heart, inner space, balance, soul… Presence is the connection with kinetics, with the engine, the spark that makes a puppet exist and act.
PROCESS AND SCHEDULE
We can think that the workshop is divided into three processes that are always mixed.
They are as follows:
1. Research of the subjects
At this stage, all the people in the workshop will research organic and synthetic materials that are part of everyday life.
We will do a collective research, of subjects that are contemporary and utilitarian, such as cotton fabrics and papers.
Juliana will then accompany each participant's personal and intimate research processes.
With a lot of experimentation we will create a great laboratory of skins and textures.
2. Construction of being
From the research immersion of the materials and the skins, we will enter the construction of the puppet, of the being.
As the whole process is personal and intimate, from the search for the subjects, the being will be as well.
This puppet will become a part of the body of the participants, made with the viscera and in extreme and deep connection.
Juliana will accompany each participant in their process.
We will also carry out collective research and construction processes.
There is no pre-defined technique.
3. Movement and soul
The study of the gestures of the new being and their kinetic abilities and disabilities is the basis of this stage.
Each participant will organize a study of the movement and create a score of actions with the puppet.
We will carry out an exhaustive work of body-object connection, working from the idea of life and death, continuously.

Workshop designed and taught by Juliana Notari I 20 years of cia. Puppet Book
JULIANA NOTARI
Brazilian artist, puppeteer, director, pedagogue and performer. He is fascinated by the eyes and hands of the people. You can watch for days the path that ants take on the walls. For 20 years he has been dedicated to the art of puppetry and its possibilities of fusion and construction. From the choice of the subject to the composition of the gestures and the minimum details, it goes through all the stages of the creation of a work. He works for the dissemination of contemporary puppetry and has presented his shows and pedagogy around the world, especially in Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Bolivia, Latvia, Korea, Portugal, Czech Republic, Italy, Switzerland, France and Spain, among other countries.
In 2021-2022 he carried out the project "20 years of Marionete Livre - Commemoration and Manifesto"
The Marionete Livre is a nomadic movement that Juliana Notari defends and spreads in these 20 years of trajectory through her puppet works and her pedagogical processes of exchange of knowledge and experiences around the world.
