TABLE OF CONTENTS OF MODULE 4

MÍNIMA ÀNIMA is an intensive workshop for the creation of miniature puppets from the bodily and subjective connection with the material chosen for the composition of form, texture, drama and gesture. It is part of the Free Puppet Pedagogy, developed by Juliana Notari.

Mini-puppets need specific attention from their conception to their way of moving. Juliana has a very peculiar and personal way of building her puppets and also of relating to this art and in her workshops she encourages an intimate relationship with the creations. It is a proposal for immersion in the construction of mini-puppets, the laboratory of ideas, exchanges and listening. The artist works with three primary axes in this workshop: skin, eyes and heart. This is the skeleton of the workshop.

The workshop is divided into three processes that are always mixed. They are the following:

1. Research of the subjects

The first subject of research will be the bodies of the participants, with activation and warm-up exercises. Then, all the people in the workshop will investigate organic and synthetic materials that are part of life and everyday life. There will be a collective investigation, of materials that are affective and utilitarian, such as cotton fabrics, clothes, plants and dried flowers, papers, animal skins, objects. Afterwards, Juliana Notari will accompany the personal and intimate search processes of each participant. With a lot of experimentation we will create a large laboratory of skins and textures.

2. Construction of the mini - being

From the investigative immersion of materials and skins, we will enter the construction of the marionette, of the being. Since the whole process is personal and intimate, from the research of the materials, the being will be so too. This marionette will become a part of the body of the participating people, or an extension of it, made with intimacy and in extreme and deep connection. Juliana Notari will accompany each participant in the process. We will also do collective research, observation and construction processes. We will work on notions of modelling, sculpture, collage and superposition of materials for the composition of the mini-puppet. Juliana will make prior contact with the participants to propose a pre-investigation of dramaturgical subjects and desires.

3. Movement

The study of the gestures of the new mini-being and its kinetic abilities and inabilities is the basis of this stage. Each participant will organize a movement study and create a score of actions with the marionette. Here we will work on basic and essential notions of animation and manipulation. We will carry out an exhaustive body-object connection work, working from the idea of life and death, continuously.
